Rendezvous Engineering Mathematics Science
The R.E.M.S. - Rendezvous Engineering Mathematics Science academic competition is meant to be fun for students, parents, teachers and observers. It is designed to get everyone interested and excited about science, engineering and mathematics. It is a vehicle to create excitement and interest in all fields of science, engineering and mathematics.
It is designed, in part, after the High School Academic League Competition. The high school program has a wider range of topics, has a much tighter time limit for questioning, a more limited amount of interaction between team members during a match and pits only two teams against each other at a time.
R.E.M.S. student competitors should take part and have fun. The format of a student team being able to work together, pool knowledge and processing is meant to duplicate what takes place in research, industry and higher levels of education. The amount of knowledge grows and no one person knows everything. Teams working together and combining skills and knowledge can achieve what a single individual cannot.
Student teams can discuss and try to figure out answers. The questions should challenge teams to investigate and learn more information. Observers will be able to view the questions as the students compete. Hopefully observers will also be challenged and can discuss the questions and topics later.
Student competitors may range in grade level from third to fifth. If all goes well, this may expand to further grade levels.
Any support for the R.E.M.S. program is appreciated. The support could be monetary or prize donations. Students get excited about prize ‘stuff.’ Prizes could be items used for advertising (like fun foam rockets from one donor) to writing devices with logos or names of scientific organizations, companies or institutions.
The goal is to get the public more ‘science smart’ and ‘science interested.’ We hope by starting with younger students, the interest in these important fields will grow and help inspire future scientists, engineers and mathematicians.
The REMS Season

This is a fun science competition for grades 3-5 called R.E.M.S., or Rendezvous Engineering, Math, and Science. The REMS Competition is the result of the brainstorming and coordination of Rendezvous Science Center CEO Ben Foroozan and La Jolla High School Science Team Head Coach and Physics teacher Martin Teachworth.
It is designed to be a FUN, EXCITING and LOW STRESS academic bowl competition for teams of 3rd to 5th grade students competing to determine the team with the most overall Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) knowledge. The purpose is to encourage interest in STEM, provide an outlet for interested students in a competitive but low stress environment, and help review for the Science and Mathematics portions of the California Content Standards tests.
The last three years, several 3rd, 4th and 5th grade TPES teams participated in the competition and they had a lot of fun. Each team consisted of up to 5 members with a volunteer parent/teacher coach.
Each Team Member will receive a R.E.M.S. shirt & Certificate of Participation. Recognition Prizes are awarded to the top teams at each level. Fun prizes are also given out at the end of each competition.
Competition typically occurs one night each month for four months -- usually, on Wednesday nights in November, January, March and April.
The R.E.M.S. organizers are always looking for donors to make this happen. R.E.M.S. should take place IF donors and grants come through. The money pays for the prizes, awards and feeds the Science Team helpers that stay after school without going home until after R.E.M.S. is over. It pays for the batteries and other incidental costs. The organizers do not get paid for any of this, the funds go to the students.
